Tryptophan
| |
Tryptophan is an amino acid that is a foundational building block to serotonin. It is a low affinity amino acid which means it competes with high affinity amino acids in the neurotransmission conversion process. Turkey is often thought of as a tryptophan rich food but paradoxically, too much of this protein has the potential to result in lowering serotonin levels and/or increasing dopamine levels because of tyrosine levels which are also present. See Tyrosine for more information. |

Tyrosine
| |
Tyrosine is an amino acid that is broken down to produce dopamine in the brain. All protein-rich foods contain tyrosine which can ultimately boost dopamine levels. It is a high affinity amino acid which means it is preferred over other amino acids in the neurotransmission process. |
